OPENING DAY
SPEC 2007. Photo © Jim Doty, Jr.
Good Morning All,
Thanks for your good thoughts, good wishes, and prayer yesterday. We had an uneventful and safe travel day, arriving at World’s of Fun in Kansas City for an evening of roller coasting, mambaing, funnel cake eating craziness.
Today we drive on the rest of the way to Lamoni, to Graceland College for the official start of SPEC. The Graceland campus is always busy hosting some activity or another when school is out for the summer, SPEC is by far the largest gathering of all. Starting early and going on until late into the night the campus will be crawling with people arriving, hugging, greeting one another, moving into rooms, losing keys, forgetting combinations, setting up teams, sorting out luggage, trying to answer the most often asked question (besides “when’s lunch?”) , “where’s my ………” I know I packed it?” By the end of the day close to eight hundred campers and two hundred staff will be poised, focused, crouched, ready to spring into the activities full tilt tomorrow.
“Someday is Now!” is the overall theme for SPEC 2008. The daily themes will finish that statement. Someday is now, so ……..! As we go through the week we will address the idea that today is the day we looked forward to yesterday. Today is the day we go ……….., or do …………., or be……….. Today is the important day – it’s the only one we’re assured. Yesterday, even if we did “it”, is gone, tomorrow may or may not be. So relish today, celebrate today, live today, because today is the “someday” you promised yourself you’d ………….

So hang on faithful ones; we’re ready for another exciting week of news and views from SPEC 2008. Right here in this space you will have a front row seat for all the action. Fill out your own fantasy sports card. Plan your own mouth watering virtual menu. Pick the most romantic play of the day. Or just sit back and enjoy, with us, the development of the challenge, that “Someday is Now!”
The Rockies delegation is stirring, the shower is running continually, hair dryers and curling irons are taxing electric capabilities of the church wiring, bags are being packed and ready to be loaded into awaiting vehicles. This reporter has already hear the question of the morning, “when’s breakfast?” So I better go and attend to my other duties.
Have a wonderful day. Keep up the good wishes, thoughts and prayer. And plan to spend a few minutes each day in the world of your kids and this reporter, as we ride the exhilarating ride that is SPEC 2008.
Until tomorrow,
Your faithful reporter, Bob
